What "12V" and "24V" Actually Mean

The number refers to the voltage of the battery powering the car not the size of the vehicle itself. Voltage doesn't change how "big" the car looks in the box a 12V and a 24V version of the same model can look nearly identical. What changes is what's underneath: motor strength, battery size, and how the car behaves once your child is actually driving it.

A 12V ride-on car is the right starting point for toddlers and younger kids who are getting behind the wheel for the first time. These cars are lighter, slower, and easier to control, which matters more than raw power at this age.

Most 12V cars top out around 2–4 mph roughly a toddler's walking-to-jogging pace so there's a real safety margin built into the low voltage. They're also lighter overall, which makes them easier to lift, store, and carry up front steps or into a garage.

24V Ride-On Cars: Built for Bigger Kids and Bigger Yards

Once a child outgrows the 12V category usually around age 4 and up, or once they're pushing past the 65 lb range a 24V ride-on car is the better fit. The extra voltage means more torque, which is what actually lets the car move across grass, gravel, or a slightly uneven backyard instead of bogging down.

Where 24V works best:

  • Kids over 4, or heavier riders who need more torque to get moving
  • 2-seaters, where a second passenger adds significant weight

When 24V (or 4x4) Is a Must-Have

4x4 ride-on cars. True 4-wheel-drive models need power going to all four wheels simultaneously, which a 12V battery generally can't sustain without draining fast or losing torque on inclines. Almost every 4x4 ride-on on the market runs 24V for this reason.

2-seater ride-on cars. A second child roughly doubles the load the motor has to move. Combine that with typical backyard terrain grass, small bumps, gravel driveways and a 12V motor will struggle. 24V is the standard for a reason here.

Replacement Batteries: 12V 7Ah vs 24V 7Ah, and Canadian Winters

"7Ah" refers to amp-hours essentially how long the battery can run before needing a recharge, regardless of voltage. A 12V 7Ah and a 24V 7Ah battery both store roughly the same runtime capacity, but they are not interchangeable: putting the wrong voltage battery in a ride-on car can damage the motor or the controller, so always match the replacement to your car's original voltage.

Canadian winters are hard on ride-on batteries either way. Cold temperatures reduce a lead-acid battery's effective capacity sometimes noticeably so a battery that ran 60–90 minutes in summer may run visibly less once temperatures drop. A few things extend battery life through a Canadian winter:

  • Store the car (and battery, if removable) indoors or in a heated garage rather than an unheated shed
  • Charge fully before long storage periods and top up every few weeks even if the car isn't in use
